GERRY SINNOTT 2 60X40[1]

As one of the most prestigious theatre venues in Ireland, The Olympia Theatre has played host to some of the finest shows and has seen the highest calibre of performers perform within its walls. Many can say that former owner, managing director and producer Gerry Sinnott is responsible for its success. The Olympia Theatre will host a very special evening to honour the legendary Gerry Sinnott on May 18th 2014.

The remarkable producer achieved so much during his eighteen year reign of Dublin’s Olympia Theatre that it only seems fitting to assemble a spectacular line up to pay respect to his amazing contribution to Dublin’s theatre and music life. Performers that have shone on the stage at The Olympia will come together for one night to celebrate his success. So far performances have been confirmed from The High Kings, Dickie Rock, Red Hurley, Rebecca Storm, Mary Byrne, Frank Kelly, Tony Kenny, Eugene Mc Carthy’s Big Band, The Norma Hurley Stage School and The Olympia Dancers.

Gerry created jobs and kept Irish performers, singers, dancers, actors, directors and musicians in work for many years. He changed the way that pantomimes were viewed in Ireland by modernising the musical content to make them equally appealing for adults and children, therefore creating the perfect family day out.  He took many big risks to pull off the shows that he nurtured including spending one million Irish pounds on his 1990 four month run of “West Side Story” which included stars from New York and London. He cast ninety two children in his acclaimed production of Bugsy Malone and pulled it off flawlessly.

Some of Gerry’s others productions included Ireland’s first ever production of ‘Blood Brothers’ with Rebecca Storm, ‘Children of a Lesser God’ which was so critically acclaimed that it transferred directly into London’s West End after its phenomenal success in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre. ‘Grease’ with Neighbours star Craig McLaughlin, ‘Keely & Du’ with Oscar winner Louise Fletcher and Helen McCrory, ‘Oliver’, ‘The Rocky Horror’, ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Annie’ starring a young Susan McFadden, ‘Noises Off’, ‘The Rocky Horror’, ‘Lady Chatterys Lover’ starring “Olivia Tracy”, ‘Sikulu’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ with Brian McFadden and an unknown Alex Sharpe who went on to star in ‘Celtic Woman’, ‘Run for Your Wife’ with Father Ted’s ‘Father Jack’, Frank Kelly, ‘The King And I’, ‘Side by Side by Sondheim’ with Senator David Norris and many many more!

The legacy of some of Gerry Sinnott’s biggest achievements are enjoyed today by millions, namely his successful campaign to have VAT removed from theatre tickets which was accomplished in 1984. Gerry also started the late night music trend in Ireland with his ‘Midnight at the Olympia’ shows and was the first in Ireland to receive the late night theatre licence which is enjoyed by every nightclub and late night bar in Ireland today.

The ‘Olympia Stars Salute to Gerry Sinnott’ is a night to pay tribute to this successful producer whose tenure taking care of the old lady of Dame Street spun such a rich tapestry of theatrical gold. During his successful reign, he achieved so much artistically and all without grants or assistance from the arts council or government bodies. And so, for one very special night, the theatrical community will join together to thank Gerry for his incredible theatrical contribution. Gerry’s daughters, West-end star Fiona Sinnott and ex Theatre Manager Tara Sinnott will be in attendance along with many celebrities and surprise guests for what promises to be a truly memorable night!

Tickets priced €30 inclusive of booking fee on sale now from Ticketmaster outlets, www.ticketmaster.ie and The Olympia Theatre Box Office
